Workshop: The Reactive Net

I’m running my new workshop, “The Reactive Net,” for the first time this coming Sunday for the Loudoun County Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Group. Interestingly, the workshop started as an email to help somebody in the group who was having trouble getting his series to gell properly. I turned that into a blog entry, which grew unexpectedly long and complex. I refer to it, somewhat affectionately, as the Blog Entry That Ate Celeveland. In turn, I submitted the blog entry to the group for review (as a non-fiction piece), and the group not only felt it was worthwhile, but asked me to schedule it as a workshop.

So here’s the summary that I came up with for the workshop:

The Reactive Net

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you’ve noticed that a lot of authors are making money with series. But crafting a series is hard, and it’s a subject that’s not covered in most writing manuals. Come learn about the Reactive Net, a set of steps for creating a coherent, consistent and connected background to support multiple story lines leveraging the same setting, primary characters and supporting characters. Give your series the foundation it needs to become what you want it to be.

Looking forward to your tips and tricks…cause you are so correct. The series? Ugh, not easy is right.

Woohoo!!! The workshop went well today. Seven other die-hard members of the writing group ventured out into the ice and snow to attend with me, so I was very pleased with that. And the reaction was very positive, so thank you, thank you very much.

In fact, there was a general consensus that I should run it again, at its more natural length of two hours, perhaps at one of the local libraries. So, I will investigate doing this….

Loved it Dave. Please post if you decide to do an actual session at the Library.

By the way, I’ve submitted this to Balticon as a workshop idea for the convention. I’m also going to submit it to Capclave, but their submission forms aren’t online yet (the convention isn’t until October 2015).
