Inspiration: Venice

I’ve never been to Venice, though I hope to visit sometime in the post-COVID-19 era. I’ve always been fascinated by its prominence in history, first as a major financial and maritime power during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance and later as a major player in the arts.

I’m intrigued as well by the geological audacity embodied in building a city on 118 islands in the middle of the Venetian Lagoon, an enclosed bay lying between the mouths of the Po and Piave rivers. I mean, basically, they built the city on a bunch of silt banks and bars deposited by the rivers (which also kind of explains why they have problems with subsidence).

Still, every time I look at a picture of Venice, I want to go there and see it for myself. Looks like I’ve still got something I need to check off my bucket list.
